Biochar is a highly porous charcoal intended to be used as a soil amendment, to improve moisture management and act as a nutrient sync.
You can use it as a horticultural charcoal for your orchids, potted plants, garden beds or many other uses.
We also use Biochar a substrate to culture our springtails.
Simply rinse the bag of charcoal and dump into any suitable container, such as a 32oz deli cup or a plastic shoe box. Add a starter culture of Tropical Springtails and feed them Jungle Jewel Exotics Springtail food, and in no time you’ll have a master culture teaming with new Springtails.

At Jungle Jewel Exotics we use Biochar in our Premium Jungle Soil to improve its effectiveness as a vivarium substrate. It helps improve our substrates ability to manage moisture by helping the soil to drain, yet remain moist. Charcoal takes a very long time break down in a vivarium.
The random sizing and shape of this horticultural charcoal will create small air pockets in the soil which will promote strong root growth and water drainage.
The tiny pores in Biochar also help retain nutrients and slowly release them back to the plants as they require them. Charcoal also very effect at controlling odor and bacteria, which means your vivarium will always smell earthy and fresh.
You can use Biochar to make an Orchid Potting Mix, an Aroid Potting Mix or a Hoya Potting mix. By mixing various ratios or combinations of Reptiscape Coco Coir, Reptiscape Coco Husk Chips, ReptiBark (Fir bark), BioChar (Horticultural Charcoal), Tuface, Perlite, and some Sphagnum Moss you can create a suitable potting mix tailored to your individuals plant’s needs.
