Reptiscape Casuarina Cones – 15 Pack

Reptiscape Casuarina Cones are an excellent way to enhance the look of any naturalistic Terrarium, Vivarium and Aquarium! You can also boil these cones to create a black water extract for a tadpole tea or add natural tannin to an aquarium.  Casuarina cones come from an Australian native pine tree species in the Casuarinacaea family. The native range extends from Thailand, New Caledonia, and South to Australia.

Casuarina cones are similarly used like Alder cones to increase the tannin in and aquarium. Shrimp enthusiasts love these little cones! The physical characteristics of cones attract a biofilm, providing an interesting foraging surface for the shrimp to feast on.

We recommend adding 5-6 cones per every 10 gallons. These cones will change the tint of your water, adding less over a longer period will allow you to better gauge your intended effect. The cones will have leached out all their tannins in about a month. Then simply add a few more cones to maintain the water quality as desired.

It is good practice to add the cones to boiling water prior to introducing them into your aquarium as this will remove any excess natural debris.

Combine Casuarina Cones with Alder Cones and Indian Almond leaves to create a potent Black Water extract to help soften the water used for shrimp and some fish. You can find the recipe here

How to clean and sanitize Casuarina Cones for a terrarium or aquarium

While you can simply rinse the cones, it is recommended that you also sterilize them prior to using them in a terrarium or aquarium. To achieve this you can microwave damp leaves for 1-2 minute, boil the cones for approximately 5 minutes, or bake damp cones at 200 °F for approximately 15-20 minutes.
