What are Cork Branches?
Cork Branches are a natural product that comes from Cork Trees. Which are primarily grown in Portugal and other areas in Europe. The cork branches are removed without the need to cut down any trees, making this a sustainable and ethical product.
Cork trees can live for approximately 300 years and at about 25 years old onwards, the bark is stripped from the tree and used for many applications. This process actually encourages the tree to grow and regenerate the bark, which can be harvested every 7-9 years without harming the tree or affecting its life span.
Each cork branch is unique; they are heavily textured in varying shades of brown. They are often covered in dried moss and lichen, making them a beautiful, natural addition to any habitat. Cork is also available in a wide range of shapes and sizes including flat, half round and hollow tubes. It can easily be cut to size, or broken to create multiple branches to suit your animals needs.
The benefits of using thin cork branches in a terrarium
Thin Cork Branches are incredibly versatile, and help maximize the vertical space within the enclosure. They are suitable for virtually all species of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. The pieces will be readily used for climbing on and basking, even for egg laying in some species.
The deeply textured bark is perfect for adding environmental enrichment, encouraging natural climbing and foraging behaviours. It is also perfect for aiding animals with their shedding cycle (ecdysis) by providing areas to rub their bodies along to remove the old skin.
Unlike some other varieties of wood, cork bark does not rot or go moldy in humid environments. Cork is naturally buoyant and hydrophobic, meaning it will float if used in paludariums or aquariums.
Because of its impermeable properties, it is perfect for use with reptiles and amphibians as it will not absorb and harbour bacteria and can be easily washed and scrubbed to remove any surface residue. Our Cork Branches are responsibly sourced from Europe and are safe and natural for your exotic pet. Due to the drying process, our cork will also have minimal risk of introducing unwanted pests into your controlled environment.
