LECA – The Best Terrarium Drainage Layer

LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate)

LECA Terrarium Drainage Layer is commonly used as a false bottom when building your terrarium, vivarium or paludarium. Simply place a minimum of 2 inches of LECA in the bottom of your Vivarium then place a lightweight barrier (fabric weed barrier or nylon window screening works well) Then place your terrarium Jungle Soil substrate on that.

If you intend to place a water feature such as a waterfall please increase the amount of drainage layer to allow enough clearance for you pump to work efficiently. allow for extra clearance to account for evaporation.

Jungle Jewel Exotics sells LECA in 4 Liter or 9 Liter bags. A small bag (4L) will give you a 2 inch drainage layer in a 12×12″ terrarium or vivarium. A large bag (9L) will give you a 2 inch drainage layer in a 18×18″ terrarium or vivarium. If you building a 24×18″ vivarium please use a minimum of a 4L plus a 9L bag of LECA to get a 2 inch base.

If you intend to use a pump for a water fall in your vivarium or paludarium, please double up everything to get a 4 inch base of drainage layer.

LECA is a generic term, you may find other popular brand name such as HydroBalls, Hydroton and HydroCorn.
