Excelsior is the ideal surface to be used in homemade Fruit Fly cultures. Excelsior replaces coffee filters, paper plates, paper towels and other materials previously used by hobbyists. One common reason fruit fly cultures crash is because of overpopulation stress. This occurs when to many flies are forced to walk over each other. Visit our Blog on how to prevent fruit fly cultures from crashing for more information. By using Excelsior, you give your fruit flies addition surface area to crawl on and additionally to lay their eggs on.
Excelsior helps stabilize and increase the life span of a healthy homemade fruit fly culture, as it doesn’t compact or fall into a culture like other paper products previously used. By stabilizing your fruit fly culture you will also see an increase in fruit fly production. This will also result in healthy, larger, plumper flies for you to feed to your Dart Frogs, other amphibians, and reptiles.
Excelsior is a renewable wood based product, sometimes referred to as wood wool. Since it is made of wood, it is also compostable. Making this a smart environmentally friendly choice when making your homemade fruit fly cultures. Jungle Jewel Exotics recommends composting your expired fruit fly cultures at every opportunity you can. You can also reuse your 32 oz deli cups and lids for bonus points.
How to use Excelsior
Each 50 gm bag contains enough excelsior to make approximately 12-15 new fruit fly cultures, and the 200 gm will make approximately 50 new cultures. Simply tear off a small handful and roll or fold it into a loose fluffy ball. Then place it into your newly made fruit fly culture and cover immediately to prevent native “flying flies” from entering the culture and breeding. Add flightless fruit flies to your new culture once it has cooled to an acceptable temperature.
